Dad was a soft, gentle man who wore his heart on his sleeve—willing to give his love and soft touch to anybody who needed it. He was able to make any difficult situation better with only the warmth of his ‘wider than life’ smile. He always felt compassion for the working man—the ones we often forget. He was able to relate and understand them, for that was who he was. He set high standards and goals for himself both in his work and personal life. He was compassionate and tender—loving and wonderful and ready to give a bear hug to those he cared about.
When I was a young boy at about 8 or so, dad took me to the shop on some Saturdays. I would not be able to sleep in anticipation of going to work with Dad.
When at the shop, he was a master butcher—the
very best. Everything had to be prepared perfectly for his cherished clientele. I would never take my eyes off of him, thinking one day I want to be as expert a butcher as he and try to come close to being just like him … he was my very own Superman!
