Fresh German Bratwurst - Artisanal Handmade Sausages

Fresh German Bratwurst

Mildly flavored with floral hints of nutmeg and mace, this is a traditional fresh German pork sausage—made by hand, the Old World way.

Fresh sausages are best simmered for about 10 minutes before browning under the broiler, in a frying pan, or on the grill.

Fresh German Bratwurst is available in 1-pound packages, 4 sausages per pack.

Preparing Fresh Sausages

Fresh sausages should be simmered before a final browning in the same pan or on the grill. All of the fresh sausages we sell through Lobel’s Sausage Shop can be simply prepared using the following method regardless of the sausage link’s size.
  1. Place sausages in a frying or sauté pan just big enough to hold them in a single layer.
  2. Fill pan with water to a depth of about 1/4 inch.
  3. Simmer sausages until the water has evaporated.
  4. To brown the sausages:
    • Add a small amount of oil to the pan—be sure the pan is dry to avoid spattering. Cook gently over medium heat until sausages are browned. Do not cook too hot or too fast or the fragile casings will break.
    • If preparing sausages for the grill, remove from pan after simmering and grill over moderate heat.
