Lobel’s Tradition

“… rated tops in taste … Testers called Lobel’s ‘delectable’ and said they could cut the steaks with a fork.”Good Housekeeping, November 2001

That’s the taste of 160 years of Lobel family experience as renowned practitioners of the butcher’s art and purveyors of the finest meat available anywhere—at any price.

With the Lobel’s of New York online butcher shop, we can now extend our signature quality, service, and selection to customers in all 50 states.

We are proud to offer dry-aged USDA high-prime and Wagyu beef, all-natural veal, lamb, and poultry, Kurobuta pork, heritage meats, and specialty products.

To ensure optimum flavor and freshness, each order is hand-cut, individually vacuum-sealed, securely packed, and delivered overnight—fresh from our hands to your door.

Our rigorous meat selection process differentiates our product from meat available in most stores. We only buy USDA prime beef, which accounts for less than 2% of all beef. But within the prime beef category, We take only the finest cuts, paying up to a 10% premium to get the best. We then dry agethe beef for four to six weeks, a process our family sees as an art, and one that can mean the difference between a good and a great tasting piece of meat. Steaks, filets and roasts from Lobel’s are unlike any others on the market, which prompted a Wall Street Journal writer to note of a Lobel’s steak, "It was so perfect—in looks, taste, and texture—that we were tempted to eat it raw. The buttery flavor was beyond comparison."

Our exacting quality standards are not limited to beef. We also offer USDA prime, all-natural lamb, selecting the most tender and flavorful lamb on the market. Similarly, we only sell fresh all-natural veal that is firm, moist, and velvety and comes from formula-fed animals that are not penned.

More recently, we’ve expanded our product lines to include the highly prized Wagyu beef, Kurobuta pork, all-natural poultry, artisanal sausages, sauces, condiments and seasonings, specialty foods, and merchandise.

Customer Service

“This isn’t just a mail-order butcher; it’s a true gourmet meat operation … a top flight butcher with a longer-than-average aging process that yields more complex flavor. And Lobel’s ... customer support is the best in the industry.”Money Magazine, November 2004

But it is also our willingness to answer questions and explain meat selection and preparation that keeps our customers coming back, a feature that has been replicated on the Web site in the Lobel’s Guide To Meat, Recipes & Techniques, and personal e-mail and telephone customer service options.

In launching our online business, our family has strived to stay true to the fundamental business principles that made their New York store so successful: an unwavering commitment to high quality standards and superior customer service.

Lobel Family History

Our family has been purveyors of fine meats for five generations, and we prideourselves on upholding the highest standards of quality and personal service.

Nathan Lobel began raising beef cattle in Austria in the 1840s, and with the help of his son, later added a slaughterhouse to the business. Nathan’s grandson Morris joined the family business as a boy, and in 1911, at the age of 17, he emigrated to the U.S. He eventually settled in New York, where he opened a butcher shop, first in the Bronx and later at the current location on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. From the beginning, Morris Lobel was obsessed with service and quality, and he instilled this obsession in his sons Leon, Nathan, and Stanley, who followed their father into the family business. Today, Leon and Stanley remain active in the store, while their own sons David, Evan, and Mark have emerged as the fifth generation of Lobels to carry forward the family commitment to the highest quality standards and unmatched customer service.
